On May 21'st 2008 VMK was shut down permanently. Because of this opening times had to be limited, it was open to the public daily between 7:00am-10:00pm PST (10:00am and 1:00am EST, 3:00pm-6:00am UTC). It is due to this that the game had to be patrolled by paid staff, watching out for inappropriate behaviour and language, keeping the virtual world safe. The target audience of the game was for children between the ages of 8 and 14, although VMK was designed to be enjoyed by Guests of all ages. The game closed on May 21, 2008.VMK initially launched as a part of the Disneyland 50th Celebration with no intentions of the type of longevity or popularity that it ended up having. The rest of Tomorrowland opened on Apwith the final land to be added on January 8, 2007, which was New Orleans Square. The Tomorrowland game area was made available on October 5, and Frontierland opened on December 12. This "beta" designation was removed on June 27. The beta version opened publicly on with three virtual lands to explore: Main Street USA, Fantasyland, and Adventureland. It was launched as part of the Happiest Celebration on Earth promotional campaign to commemorate fifty years of Disney theme parks. It was a virtual representation of the Disneyland and Magic Kingdom theme parks, containing areas and minigames which were based on real park scenery and attractions. Disney's Virtual Magic Kingdom, also known simply as VMK, was a free massively multiplayer online game run by Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Online.
